“KIM & CHO, as a socially responsible law firm, is building a solid foundation for the continued advancement of intellectual property rights and for the nation's leap forward as a technology powerhouse.”
Social Responsibility
KIM & CHO is continuously contributing to society by fostering the next generation of intellectual property professionals in Korea. Kang Myung-koo, the current head of KIM & CHO, was selected as a government-sponsored trainee by the Korean Intellectual Property Office and passed the second patent attorney examination as the youngest successful candidate. At that time, only eight candidates passed. Today, approximately 200 patent attorneys are produced annually in Korea amid fierce competition.
Since the 1960s, alongside the nascent stages of Korea's industrialization, KIM & CHO has been a leading law firm in Korean intellectual property and has contributed significantly to the training of patent attorneys in order to produce higher-quality professionals.
A prime example is Hanyang University, which demonstrates outstanding achievements in the engineering field, serves as Kang Myung-koo's alma mater, and is a renowned Korean university that produces many new patent attorneys each year. To enable more junior colleagues to fully realize their potential in the intellectual property field, KIM & CHO has continuously supported the cultivation of patent attorneys within the university. Guided by the motto, “In this world, there are three kinds of people: those who are indispensable, those whose presence or absence makes no difference, and those who should not exist. One must always strive to be a person who is truly needed in any field and contributes to society,” we have made numerous donations and contributions to nurturing junior patent attorneys with the heart of a life mentor and senior patent attorney, aiming to create new talent for a changing world.
Furthermore, KIM & CHO assists newly licensed patent attorneys each year in developing and growing through training programs at our firm. We take pride in knowing that, through these efforts, we are contributing to the sustainable development of Korea's intellectual property rights and creating the fertile soil that enables Korea to advance and lead in the field of technology.
Public Interest Legal Support
Beyond large corporations and venture companies, there are many small business owners and individual inventors who face difficulties in the field of intellectual property. While various legal support services are provided for them in Korea, there are limits to how well individuals and small business owners recognize and effectively utilize these services. KIM & CHO's ‘Public Interest Legal Support’ offers tailored free consultations and reasonably priced assistance programs to help small business owners and individual inventors efficiently establish and protect their intellectual property rights. The focus is on strengthening the social responsibility of a major law firm and assisting early-stage entrepreneurs—who are often underserved—in achieving stable business growth. Through these efforts, KIM & CHO aims to help more people across a wider range of fields protect their intellectual property and, in turn, grow their businesses.
